John McLaurin

Our dear brother in the Lord, John McLaurin, passed away on Dec 13, 2016. What a wonderful example he was of living one’s life fully for the Lord. Here is his posted obit from the newspaper:

McLAURIN, John David 78, of Tampa (formerly South Bend, IN and Vienna, VA), passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 13, 2016.

Surviving is his wife of 52 years, Marlene; sons, John (Benita), Matthew (Courtney), Paul (Lisa), and Luke (Tricia); grandchildren, Jessica, John Mark, J. Corynn, Mattison, Tori, Ian, Violet, Colin, Leila, and Thad. Also surviving is his brother, Bob. John is pre­deceased by his brother, Jim and also by his and Marlene’s dear son, Mark.

A native of Asheville, NC John grew up in Michigan where he earned his undergraduate and graduate degree from the University of Michigan in Civil Engineering, and was a Doctoral Candidate in Forestry. He served proud­ly in the Korean Conflict with the US Army. John retired from US Government Senior Executive Service serving as a Cartographer for the Department of Interior. As Director of the Rocky Mountain Mapping Center, he presided over 400 employees.

John was a voracious reader, constantly learning and always willing to share his thoughts and wisdom. A quiet, loving, spiritual man and member of People of Praise, his family and friends will miss him greatly. Interment on a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions made in John’s name to the American Heart Association,
